What are Changing Places Toilets?
Changing Places Toilets are designed so that they are completely accessible and provide sufficient space and specialist equipment for people who are not able to use the toilet independently. They must be an extra facility, in addition to the accessible toilets for independent use. Standard accessible WC’s are designed for access by a standard wheelchair, but they are unlikely to provide adequate space for a powered wheelchair, or a wheelchair with additional head or leg support fittings. Standard accessible WC’s are also only designed for independent use by the individual and there is usually insufficient room to accommodate a carer /carers if the user requires assistance.
Changing Places give people with profound and multiple disabilities who are unable to use a standard WC or accessible toilet, a safe and dignified facility that provides everything they may need. Without these vital facilities, carers are forced to change loved ones on the floor or be confined to their own homes.
Why do we need Changing Places?
Almost 1 in 5 people have a disability and ensuring we provide suitable toilet facilities are vital to help create equality in our society. Many make the conscious decision not to visit somewhere if they feel they do not have a clean, suitable environment to toilet. These include individuals with profound and multiple learning disabilities, those with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, spina bifida, motor neurone disease, older people or those who have acquired a brain injury. These are the people who need better-equipped public toilets, and if there are no Changing Places, then their needs aren’t being met. Without these facilities people with disabilities and their families cannot take part in activities that most of us take for granted.
Changing Places facilities provide more than the standard accessible toilets. Offering more space and additional equipment ensuring there is room for a powered wheelchair or multiple carers to easily help the user.
An overview of the equipment expected in these facilities include:
- Full room covering ceiling hoist system providing access between changing bench, basin and toilet
- Height adjustable, adult sized changing table/bench
- Peninsular toilet
- Height adjustable washbasin
- Privacy screen or curtain to allow some privacy
- Wide tear-off paper roll to cover the bench
- A large waste bin for disposable pads
- Grab rails where appropriate to provide necessary support
- Emergency alarm cord to summon help if necessary
- A non-slip floor
- A safe & clean environment
- Showering facility (optional)

The Home Lift Seat
It lowers disabled people onto the toilet and raises them back up again to their feet, doing so under power with a smooth action and utilizing a “sit-to-stand” motion. This motion is recognized as the most efficient way of getting to one’s feet as it allows the application of the body’s major muscle groups in the correct order. It mimics the rise motion of most “rise and recline” armchairs so is a familiar movement for many people. It therefore allows people to toilet independently or with reduced care while at the same time minimizing the risk of a fall or getting stuck.

- Utilises an anatomically correct “sit-to-stand” motion
- Use over your own toilet with no works required
- Proper oval shaped opening allowing for easy toileting
- Quick and easy to set up
- Safely use the toilet on your own or with reduced care
- Reduce the risk of falls and associated injuries, and reduce the chances of being unable to get off the toilet

Modern Mobility System
The European population is ageing. There will be 75 million people over the age of 65 in Europe in 2020, and 88 million in 2030. The share of people aged 65+ should increase from 17.5% of the population in 2010 to 29.5% in 2060.
This requires reconsidering existing mobility systems in order to meet the needs of older people and help to combat social exclusion and support independent living especially for those with reduced mobility.
For elderly and disabled, the SeeUs system can be complemented with the SeeUs App. With this the LED unit can be triggered just by being in proximity of predefined bus stops automatically informing favorite bus lines about special needs such as boarding assistance. The SeeUs App also supports stop and support requests to be initiated from the app while onboard. Part of the functionality is also available as a bluetooth tag.
Handling Pick-up Requests from a Specific Stop
Thanks to the optional NB-IoT communication module, status and events can be uploaded to the SeeUs Monitoring System in real-time. With this SeeUs can handle pick-up requests from a specific stop and generate notifications / commands triggering execution. For example, autonomous busses can be triggered for pick-up at a specific station. Another example is Public transport on sea.
Typically, public transport on sea is relying on old fashion semaphores to flag that someone is to be picked up at a specific dock. With SeeUs such requests can be made either via push button or App triggering notification to approaching ferries.
For the latter use case, SeeUs improves fuel economy and reduces wear on engines thus increases the life of ships. It shortens travel time and allows time tables to be optimized. Last but not the least, it has a positive environmental impact by contributing to reducing noise and pollution.

Non-slip Clipboards assist people with restricted mobility to handle the paperwork in a more comfortable manner.
Fire door holders operate using a magnet, which holds the door open. In the event of a fire the magnet is released and the door closes.
As fire doors should be kept closed to prevent fire or smoke spreading throughout a building, this can cause problems in buildings where there is a lot of movement of people e.g. education establishments, hospitals, hotels.
Rather than illegally wedging open fire doors (which have automatic closers fitted) to ease access, fire door holders will safely hold open a door and release it in the event of a fire.
The trigger for the magnet releasing is a fire alarm; the fire alarm will communicate differently depending on the mechanism you use. Hardwired systems are actually wired into the building’s fire panel. In the event of a fire, the power supply is withdrawn and the magnet releases. Therefore, the door will also close in the event of power failure, meaning they are fail safe. Hardwired systems require an electrical engineer to install them. The radio systems are category A compliant, as defined by BS7273-4.
Door holders help venues to comply with the Equality Act 2010 with regard to the provision of disabled access. Geofire designs and manufactures a range of acoustic, radio controlled or hard wired fire door holders.

Radio systems connect wirelessly to a controller via radio signals. This controller is mains powered and easily wired into the existing fire panel and therefore does not alter the building infrastructure. In the event of a fire, the controller is triggered into alarm mode by the fire panel and signals the holders to release. The Salamander radio systems are category A compliant, as defined by BS7273-4.
Acoustic systems are a cost effective plug and play type solution, which listens for the fire alarm. Geofire’s acoustic solution, the Agrippa range, is the first of its kind on the market; it listens and learns your specific fire alarm releasing the magnet when it hears a particular sound. This differs from others on the market, which release the magnet on hearing any loud noise. This significantly reduces false activations. The Agrippa range can be fitted by anyone; it involves fitting the unit and keeper plate to the wall behind the door and performing a learn procedure. The Agrippa acoustic systems are category B compliant, as defined by BS7273-4.
The Agrippa magnetic fire door holder is a battery-powered device used to legally hold open internal fire doors. The device is fitted to the wall and a keeper plate is fitted to the top of the door to ensure there is no damage to the floor and to prevent door warping. The Agrippa magnetic fire door holder can also be floor mounted if required. The Agrippa holder uses a magnet to hold the door open to ease access during the day, in the event of the fire alarm sounding, the door is automatically closed to prevent the spread of smoke and flames. The red button on the device allows users to manually close the door if needed. The holder is easy to install and maintain due to its LED display screen and daily timed release option, used to ensure that all fire doors are closed at the end of the day. The Agrippa door holder will not hold the door open if the batteries run out of power and features a low battery warning. The Agrippa holder uses ‘listen and learn’ technology to record the specific sound of the building’s alarm, ensuring the doors will close upon hearing this sound, rather than reacting to loud noises such as school children or vacuum cleaners. The Agrippa device can be fitted to internal fire doors in less than 10 minutes.

Electrical connection is via an IP65 connector supplied with the magnet. A wide range of AC and DC voltages are available to order.
Door Closers
Fire door closers will hold open a fire door when required to ease access and automatically close the door in the event of a fire. Fire doors should be kept closed to prevent fire or smoke spreading throughout a building. All fire doors should be fitted with a door closer. Geofire’s door closers are a complete door holder and closer in one door-mounted unit. Geofire designs and manufactures a radio controlled fire door closer and an acoustic fire door closer, as well as a mechanical closer that will simply close the door after opening.
Geofire fire door closers operate using magnets, the magnet will resist closure of the door until it is released in the event of a fire. The trigger for the magnet releasing is a fire alarm; the fire alarm will communicate differently depending on the mechanism you use.

The Agrippa fire door closer is fitted in place of a traditional door closer to hold the fire door open in any position, whilst ensuring the door will close in the event of a fire. It is a ‘free-swing’ device which makes heavy fire doors resistance free, light and easy to move. The closer is battery-powered and features an LED display screen to make maintenance easy. The screen will display a low battery warning and can also be used to set up a daily timed release to make sure all fire doors are closed at night. The closer will not hold the door if the batteries run out of power. The Agrippa fire door closer enables the door to be held open in any position within 60-105 degrees; this allows users to hold the door slightly open, which prevents feelings of isolation in a care home, for example. The red button on the unit is used to manually close the door. Now dual mode – Ready to protect straight from the box, ready to learn the sound of your fire alarm. The Agrippa closer uses ‘listen and learn’ technology to record the specific sound of the building’s alarm, ensuring the doors will close upon hearing this sound, rather than reacting to loud noises such as school children or vacuum cleaners. The Agrippa fire door closer is particularly suitable in environments where minimal disruption during installation is desired such as hospitals, schools and hotels.
The Salamander radio controlled fire door closer holds open and safely closes the fire door in the event of a fault or fire. Salamander is a system of battery-powered, magnetic fire door holders controlled by radio signals from a central controller. Holding fire doors open:
- Ensures ease of access throughout the building
